This is not your typical Pablo Escobar Tour Medellin.
Instead of glorifying violence, Beyond Escobar offers a respectful, critical, and deeply educational perspective on the cocaine industry — its Indigenous roots, economic foundations, global consequences, and, most importantly, its victims.
Over the course of 2.5 to 3 hours, this walking tour leads you through four key locations in Medellín’s El Poblado district. You’ll start at Parque Lineal La Frontera, learning about the sacred uses of coca leaves among Indigenous communities, and how this plant was transformed into one of the world’s most devastating illegal drugs — along with the environmental damage caused by its production.
At the second stop, outside the former mansion of the Castaño brothers — founders of the paramilitary group “Los Pepes” — you’ll learn about the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, the violent era of narco-terrorism, and how the U.S.-led War on Drugs shaped Colombia’s recent past.
In front of the Medellín Chamber of Commerce, we’ll dive into the hidden economy: the logic of supply and demand, money laundering networks, and the global systems that sustain the trade.
The final stop is Parque de la Inflexión, built on the ruins of Escobar’s bombed-out Monaco building. Here, the tour ends with a moment of reflection at the city’s only public memorial to the victims of narco-violence — a reminder that the story is much bigger than one man.
This tour is for curious minds who want to go deeper: into history, economics, ethics, and empathy. All content is based on academic research, and no criminal figure is celebrated.
